HODU L’ADONAI KI TOV
GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD
(excerpted from Hebrew Devotion)
by Ky M. Bishop
1 Chronicles 16:8-12
Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples.
9 Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Speak of all His wonders.
10 Glory in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad.
11 Seek the LORD and His strength;
Seek His face continually.
12 Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done,
His marvels and the judgments from His mouth, (NASU)
Today’s Hebrew phrase “hodu L’Adonai ki tov”, and the accompanying scripture both indicate the importance of giving thanks to God. Thanksgiving to God is not only encouraged, but scripture commands us to honor God by giving Him our thanks.
The scripture found in 1 Chronicles gives us some very specific methods of using our lives to God thanks to God. The first thing we find is that thanksgiving to God is accomplished by simply “calling upon His Name”. God loves His children to call Him by Name. When we say, “Abba, Father”, we are telling God that we are thankful for His presence.
When we tell others of His deeds, we pay a great compliment to God. When we expound upon the great things that He has done in our lives we are telling God that we are grateful for His blessings.
Singing and praising God is a great way to offer thanks. When we lift our hearts, voices and surrender to Him in a time of enthusiastic worship, we are professing passionately that we thank Him for taking and using our lives.
When we speak to others of the tremendous wonders that God has accomplished in generations past, and is currently accomplishing in our lives today, it is a great way to give thanks to God. Arks, burning bushes, pillars of fire and light, bread from heaven, the blind receiving sight, and the lame walking are all magnificent ways to speak of God’s wonder to a lost world.
When you stand in awe of the sun, moon and stars and all of creation, you are giving thanks to God. And when you tell your stories of personal healings, provision, protection and interaction with God, you are giving Him thanks.
When you find yourself amazed at His glory then you are thanking God. Simply marveling at why the God of the universe and all of creation would take the time for “worms” like us, speaks volumes of thanks for our wonderful God.
One of the most aggressive ways that we can give thanks to God is by seeking Him. When we seek His heart, His strength, and His face we are saying that He is important to us, and that is an incredible way of saying “thanks”.
Today’s challenge should not be challenging at all. Giving thanks to God should be one of the most natural things that we do each and every day. We should not find it in the least bit difficult to thank God. Seeking, thinking, talking and singing about Him accomplishes the thanksgiving for us.
