• “We are not quite sure what holds us back. Of course
we are busy with work and family obligation, but that is only
a smoke screen. Our busyness seldom keeps us from eating or sleeping
or making love. No, other is something deeper, more profound keeping
us in check. In reality, there are any number of “somethings”
preventing us, all of which we will explore in due time. But for
now there is on”something” that needs immediate attention
it is the notion - almost universal among us modern high achievers-
that we have to have everything “just right” in or
to pray” (p. 7).
• Simple prayer is:
· “ Bringing ourselves before God just as we are,
warts and all” (p. 9).
· “ The most common form of prayer in the Bible”
(p. 9).
· “ The good, bad, and ugly all mixed together”
(p. 10).
· “ Involving ordinary people bringing ordinary
concerns to a loving and compassionate God” (p. 10).
· “ The prayer of children, and yet we will return
to it again and again” (p. 10).
· “ Taking the ordinary events of everyday life
and giving them to God” (p. 11).
· “Telling God or our hurt and pain and our disappointment.
‘Why me?’ we cry out, ‘why me?’ For
frustration and tears and anger are also the language of Simple
Prayer” (p. 12).
· “The only place God can bless us is right where
we are, because that is the only place we are” (p. 11)!
