James 1:21

James 1:21

Review - get some examples of being quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.

I.               Vs. 21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and {all} that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

a.     Putting aside - apotithemi {ap-ot-eeth'-ay-mee} - to put off or aside or away

                                                     i.     Suppress (Henry)

ii.     lay apart--"once for all" (Commentary Critical)

iii.     must be taken off (Gill)

iv.     Paul also used this word in such passages as "putting away lying" (Ephesians 4:25), "when I became a man, I put away childish things" 1 Corinthians 13:11 (Coffman)

b.     filthiness and {all} that remains of wickedness - rhuparia {hroo-par-ee'-ah} perisseia {per-is-si'-ah} kakia {kak-ee'-ah} -all dishonoring wickedness remaining over in a Christian from his state prior to conversion

                                                     i.     those lusts which have the greatest turpitude and sensuality in them (Henry)

ii.     the abundance and overflow of it, which arises from such an evil heart, where wrath prevails, and governs (Gill)

iii.     As the children of God it "behooves us to judge in ourselves every tendency to uncleanness or abundance of evil." (Ironside)

iv.     As Christians we are supposed  to watch against, and lay aside, not only those more gross and fleshly dispositions and affections which denominate a person filthy, but all the disorders of a corrupt heart, which would prejudice it against the word and ways of God (Henry)

c.     In humility receive - dechomai {dekh'-om-ahee} prautes {prah-oo'-tace} Ð with a mildness of disposition, and gentleness of spirit; learn

                                                     i.     answering to "as new-born babes (Commentary Critical)

                                                      ii.     Receive in simplicity (Ironside)

                                                        iii.     Meekness equals weakness?

iv.     Opposite of wickedness is humility

d.     The word implanted - logos {log'-os} emphutos {em'-foo-tos} -the word inborn, implanted by nature, implanted by others instruction, or engrafted

                                                     i.     emphutos -only used here in the NT.

ii.     What does engrafted mean? Fruit trees ex.

iii.     Livingly incorporated with the believer (Commentary Critical)

iv.     The word becomes so [implanted] when it is received; when it is put into the heart by the Spirit of God, and is mixed with faith by them that hear it; so that it is, as it were, incorporated into them, and becomes natural to them, which before was not; and taking deep root in them, brings forth much fruit (Gill)

e.     Able to save your souls - dunamai {doo'-nam-ahee} sozo {sode'-zo} psuche   {psoo-khay'}  - the ability to save/rescue

                                                     i.     the (human) soul in so far as it is constituted that by the right use of the aids offered it by God it can attain its highest end and secure eternal blessedness, the soul regarded as a moral being designed for everlasting life

ii.     In all our hearing [receiving] we should aim at the salvation of our souls. It is the design of the word of God to make us wise to salvation; and those who propose any meaner or lower ends to themselves in attending upon it dishonor the gospel and disappoint their souls. We should come to the word of God (both to read it and hear it), as those who know it is the power of God unto salvation (Henry)

iii.     A strong incentive to correct our dullness in hearing the word: that word which we hear so carelessly, is able (instrumentally) to save us (Calvin)
