The Practice of Fasting

What does a person do who really wants to fast? The details of the fast are really up to the individual in terms of the length and nature of the fast. That needs to be a matter of conviction between you and God.

But there are some common elements to fasting we read about in Scripture. First, we don’t usually practice the outward signs of fasting today, such as sackcloth and ashes, however, Jesus told us not to make it obvious to others that we are fasting (Matt. 6:6-16-18). Secondly, we are to have the attitude of humility before the Lord as we enter into our fast. Another common element in the practice of fasting is prayer.

The question of fasting is, how badly do you want an answer? How much do you want deliverance from that destructive habit? How badly do you want to save your marriage? How badly do you want to see your loved one won to Christ? Do you want it enough to give up food? You may feel like giving up on a problem, but if you haven’t fasted over it yet, you have not done everything you can do.
