Simply put, fasting is the abstinence from food
for a spiritual breakthrough, ultimately to get to know God better.
Fasting is often seen as abstinence from some form of gratification,
for a period of time, in order to achieve a greater spiritual purpose.
However, fasting in the Bible involves setting aside food. Some
teach that to fast is not just abstaining from food, but from anything
that hinders our communion from God or it is just a means to practice
self-denial. It is true that there are many things besides food
that may hinder our communion with God. It is also true that we
need to practice self-denial in general. The fact still remains
that “to fast” means primarily “not to eat.”
Fasting calls us to renounce the natural in order to invoke the
supernatural. In other words, you say “No” to yourself
so you can hear “Yes” from God in a time of need or
crisis that demands a spiritual breakthrough. |
