1. Are there some illnesses or conditions that render fasting
unadvisable?
Yes and no. Obviously in cases of serious undernourishment or
exhaustion, fasting is not recommended. But almost everyone can
fast food while undertaking a partial fast. It would not be advisable
for diabetics or breast-feeding mothers to abstain from all food
for any period of time, but there would be absolutely no problem
in participating in partial fasting from food like soda, sweets,
coffee, or any other food item that is not necessary to continue
living in an intelligent and healthy manner.
2. Why do I get so cold when I fast?
While fasting, the fire of metabolism is being fueled with low-grade
fuel and consequently not generating its usual heat.
3. Is there a way of preventing dizziness during fasting?
This is usually a temporary symptom. It is sometimes caused by
a sudden change of position, especially sitting up from the lying
position. The remedy is to move slowly.
4. Can one do anything about sleeplessness?
This is sometimes due to the fact that the mind is overactive.
It is wise to avoid any concentrated mental activity before retiring,
and resist the temptation to sleep (thought not to rest during
the day. Also, eating less can actually cut down on the amount
a person needs to sleep.
5. What can be done about foul breath?
Foul breath is normal when fasting due to the release toxins from
your body. There is not much one can do for this other than brush
your teeth and gargle mouthwash. Breath mints or spray work well,
but they usually increase the hunger due to the triggering of
the digestive system.
6. How much water should one drink during a fast?
Some recommend drinking as much as possible, on the assumption
that this aids the process of elimination by flushing out the
system. Sipping water does help stave off the craving for food
and the spasms of weakness. It may be taken hot, cold, or lukewarm.
A slice of lemon in the water jug will take away the metallic
taste. When a person is not fasting, we should drink at least
eight, eight once glasses a day. The same is true when fasting,
and then some!
