When You Pray

There are many times when you will pray while fasting. Your choice of when to pray during a fast will be dependent upon your schedule and other factors in your life. The following list will give you some ideas about how to plan your prayer time when you are fasting.

VPraying during mealtime
VOne special prayer time
VPraying intermittently
VPraying the Lord’s Prayer
VPraying through a prayer list

Praying during a mealtime. Most people often associate fasting by replacing the time eating with prayer. That works for some, and others it does not. Some days it works, some days it doesn’t. I have found that I place undue guilt upon myself by setting this as a rule, when in reality it is just a expectation. Mealtimes seem to be times of meetings, family gatherings, and relaxation. What about you? Think about ways you could replace a meal with prayer. Think about if this is best for you. Remember, there is no set rule for when to pray. We often link not eating and prayer incorrectly by thinking that this means to replace food with prayer at the exact time we would eat. What works well for your own schedule?

One special prayer time. Try to give special (extra) time to prayer during your fast. This may mean getting up earlier in the morning, replacing a normal everyday activity with a prayer time, or devoting any down time you have to prayer. Examples might be to not read the paper, watch TV, or talk on the phone. What opportunities do you have to devote extra time to prayer?
